Text: Jeremiah 37-40; Proverbs 25
The Book of Proverbs does not lend itself to rapid reading as much as to taking a verse or two for thoughtful meditation. Here is one to chew on:
A man without self-control
is like a city broken into and left without walls. (Proverbs 25:28)
In Bible times, cities were compact affairs with walls all around. There were robbers, foreign invaders and wild beasts in the countryside and those walls were vital to a peaceful and safe city. Inside, people could go about their business without fear. When we are self-controlled, our life is peaceful, safe and without fear. But when we let self-control go, we are like a city which has been invaded. Walls breached, then torn down, allow any and all threats to freely enter. The disciplined life is secure. The reckless life will, in the end, be a wreck.
