Text: John 16 (Deuteronomy 13-14)
Jesus teaches much about the Holy Spirit in this “upper room discourse” (John 13:31-17:26). He points out that, among other things, it is the work of the Holy Spirit to bring people in the world under conviction:
“And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.” (John 16:8)
Some years ago I worked for the evangelist, Luis Palau. He told us that, when it came to sharing Jesus with people who were far from God, we did not need to tell them they were sinners because they already know. With some humor Dr. Palau described a scenario where nice Christians invite their neighbors over for cookies and milk only to tell them, “We have been watching your lifestyle, and it is detestable!” Can you imagine that? But that is not that far from what some Christians do. And we do not need to. The Holy Spirit has been given that dirty work to do. He enters human hearts and helps them discover that something is wrong, very wrong. And that opens their hearts for our task – to tell them the GOOD News. Jesus loves. Jesus forgives. Jesus saves. And as we do our part, the Holy Spirit is able to bring them new and everlasting life.
