Text: Ephesians 4-6; Proverbs 24:1-22
Ephesians is a rich treatise on our position in Christ and on our life in Him. In Chapter 6 we find instructions regarding “spiritual warfare.” The opening of the passage includes these words:
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12)
We experience hassles in life, trials and struggles. In our work to serve the Lord there will be opposition. Many of these struggles take the form of interpersonal matters – disputes, offenses, arguments, assaults on our character, betrayals and hostility. The words of this verse remind us that our strife is actually a matter of the unseen world – and the people around us are merely being used by “rulers… authorities… cosmic powers… spiritual forces of evil.” Our opponent is spirit, not flesh and blood. That means we fight back in ways that are other-worldly. In fact our main weapons are truth, righteousness, faith, the Gospel, our understanding of our own salvation and God’s Word. Our primary tactic is prayer. Next time you smell strife, remember this truth, and don’t fight as the world would.
in Him, Mike
