Text: Micah 4-5; Isaiah 40
Isaiah 40 opens with words of comfort and promise, and then speaks prophetically of one who will come over seven centuries later.
A voice cries:
“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord;
make straight in the desert a highway for our God.Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level,
and the rough places a plain.And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” (40:3-5)
What a great way to launch into the holiday season as we are reminded that Jesus’ earthly ministry was introduced by John the Baptist, the one fulfilling this prophecy. When we see text like this and are able to see that it truly came to pass, we are reassured. God’s Word is always true, and it is filled with marvelous promises of things yet to come. John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus. Jesus came, died for our sins, rose from the grave having conquered death, and has promised to come back. And He will! There’s something to be truly joyful over. Amen!
