For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
Text: 1 Thessalonians 3-5; Psalm 148
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 describes the resurrection of the dead and, for those who are alive on that day, what is called the “rapture.” That word comes from the Latin root from which we get the word “raptor” – the bird of prey that swoops down and snatches up its prey with talons. That is the idea – that we will be “caught up” and swept heavenward on that wonderful day. Here is the text that describes the event:
Magnificent! And, that day is coming. I had a friend who posted a sign in his office where he worked. It said, “Perhaps Today.” When people asked him what that was about, he told them about the rapture. It could very well be later today. Are you ready?
