Text: Jeremiah 34-36; Isaiah 22
In Jeremiah 36 we read that the prophet dictates a message for the men of Judah – the word of the Lord declaring that destruction is at hand. The scroll is read in the house of the Lord, then in the king’s court. The king’s advisers had this response when they heard the Word:
When they heard all the words, they turned one to another in fear. (Jeremiah 36:16).
So, they bring the scroll to the king. The response is quite different. The king cuts off pieces of the scroll as they are read, and burns them in the fire:
Yet neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words was afraid, nor did they tear their garments. (36:24)
Wow. How do we respond when we read of God’s fury and wrath against sin? Do we dare to take any part of His Word lightly?
in Him, Mike
