Text: Matthew 7 (Genesis 13-14)
Jesus uses a simple simile to teach us about obedience. It is one thing to listen to Jesus’ words, and another to step into obedience:
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. (Matthew 7:24)
When I read these words, the Sunday school song begins in my head about “the wise man built his house upon the rock… and the foolish man built his house upon the sand.” And then I think of the Sunday school punchline, “So build your life on the rock who is Jesus.” This sentiment is true, but it’s not quite what Jesus is teaching. He says the wise man is the one who “hears these words of mine and DOES them.” This is about obedience. If Jesus is Lord, it is ours to obey. If we love Him, it is ours to obey. The rock, the steadfast and strong life is found in obedience.
