Text: Matthew 20 (Genesis 39-40)
Jesus is approached by the mother of two of the disciples, James and John. She asks Jesus for special favor for her sons in Jesus’ kingdom, in particular that Jesus would make them “big shots”. This understandably makes the other disciples indignant, and so Jesus teaches them that the way of the Christ follower is not status and power, but humble service.
“But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:26-28)
This is a challenge for many of us as believers. The way of the world is all about prestige, fame, wealth, promotions at work and being the boss. We like the affirmation of others as they notice our accomplishments and lofty status. But the way of Jesus is humility and putting others first and sacrificially serving them. I have to ask myself whether this truth gets under my skin. Perhaps my ways have been self serving and not centered on the needs of others. Am I feeling any conviction right now? Are you?
